- Vented (electric) - Opens using a remote control, switch, or an app that can offer a view
- Vented (solar) - Open using a remote using solar-powered energy, can offer a view

Skylight Types
- Deck-Mounted - New, and updated design which lay closer to the roof. Often found to be more energy efficient with a sleek, low profile.

Changes in Energy Efficiency after Skylight Installation
Believe it or not, skylights can change the energy efficiency in your home. Your roof is your main protectant from outdoor temperatures. In the summer, the roof helps reflect the sun to keep the temps cooler during warmer months. During the cooler months, the insulation in the roof helps keep your home warmer.
When you cut an opening in the roof and add a window you are changing the way your roof regulates temperature in your home. Following a couple of “rules of thumb, you can maximize your energy efficiency after a skylight installation by Melo Roofing. If you’re not sure, our experts will help you out.
Tips for Perfect Positioning of Your Skylight
North Facing
Skylights that are north facing will have a constant light shining through, however no direct sun rays during peak time. Without the peak sun heat, a cooler exposure will be present.
South Facing
The southernmost areas of a home will be in sunlight for the most amount of hours in a day. Having skylights could be beneficial in the winter allowing in more heat, however, in the summer can serve to be extremely warm.
West Facing
With the setting sun each day, warm rays will shine through west-facing skylights. A roof window in this direction will get direct sun the second half of the day and can help keep the area warmer going into the evening hours.
East Facing
With the rising in the East, skylights in this direction will experience a bright morning. As the sun rises, so will the temperatures, potentially making the room warmer than others.
Melo Roofing’s Skylight Installation Process

Typical skylight installation takes place in two phases. Phase one occurs on the roof and phase two occurs inside. Check out our process below.
Phase One
Step1 - Plan with our professional installation team the best place and type of skylight you should have installed. Our team will handle any permits required as well and make sure all local codes are followed.
Step 2 - Mark the general location for the new skylight. This will include finding rafters and studs. Using a chalk line is easier when cutting the rough opening. We will make an opening that will be slightly larger than the window itself and this will allow room for the skylight box and the flashing kit.
Step 3 - Frame out the area and set the flashing around the frame/sil. The flashing will help create a barrier between the roof and the skylight making sure water does not leak through.
Step 4 - Skylight installation occurs. Having another crew member inside the home, we will lower the skylight into the frames out space. The window will be nailed down with roofing nails to make sure it is secure.
Step 5 - Seal the outside of the skylight. Using a similar barrier around the sides will allow for an added layer of protection from the outdoor elements.
Step 6 - Add a new layer of flashing and shingles around the skylight. These layers will help seal out wind and rain from the skylight giving an overall better barrier to the skylight.
Phase Two
Step 1 - Check the seal and make sure no air or water is leaking through the fully installed skylight.
Step 2 - Add new drywall to the ceiling. There may have been areas that cracked or were cut wider than needed on the inside, so adding new drywall may be required. A new coat of paint will be added to new drywall or touchups to the existing ceiling.
Skylight Installation Costs

Skylight installation costs can vary depending on the type of skylight if you're having it installed on an existing roof or a new roof, and how steep the roof is. On average, skylight costs can range anywhere from $1,200 to $5,000. Melo Roofing offers free estimates which will include materials, warranty, and labor.
If you are looking to have a skylight added to your existing roof, the costs could be higher due to the extra labor required to cut the hole and re-flash and shingle the area. If you are having your roof replaced, the charges may be less since it can be included in the cost of the replacement.
